Abstract Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify under what circumstances advisor gender and advice justification influence advice taking by managers. Design/methodology/approach The authors designed a quasirational managerial decision experiment with both analytic and intuitive cues. The design was a 2 × 2 between-subjects factorial, in which gender (male/female) and advice justification (intuitive/analytic) were crossed. The experiment involved two independent samples, taken from Amazon Mechanical Turk workers and Brazilian professionals. Findings Results suggest that, in general, analytic justification is more valued than intuitive justification. The findings also infer that depending on the advisees’ sample and providing that advice justification is analytic, quasirational scenarios seem to favor male advisors (MTurk sample) or both male and female advisors with “male values” (professional sample), as analysis is traditionally considered a “male value.” Practical implications Analytic justification will likely lead to more advice utilization in quasirational managerial situations, as it may act as a safeguard for the accuracy of the offered advice. Social implications The results might signal an ongoing, but slow, process leading to the mitigation of gender stereotypes, considering that the male gender stereotype was active in the MTurk sample, but not in the professional one. Originality/value This study contributes to the advice-taking research field by showing the interplay between advisor gender and advice justification in a quasirational managerial decision setting with both analytic and intuitive cues. In advice-taking literature, observations are usually collected from students. However, as this study focused on managerial decisions, the authors collected independent samples from MTurk workers and Brazilian professionals.

As principais teorias de cross-culture têm fornecido importantes subsídios para uma melhor compreensão das diferentes culturas nacionais, como também têm contribuído de forma significativa para as pesquisas sobre cultura organizacional. O presente estudo tem como objetivo analisar a influência da cultura nacional na validação e legitimação de práticas e modelos gerenciais. Para tal, foi feito o mapeamento da cultura organizacional de uma filial numa empresa multinacional no ramo de consultoria financeira e contábil, com presença no Brasil. Como embasamento teórico foram utilizados os arcabouços culturais elaborados por Hofstede (1990, 1991, 1994) e Trompenaars (1994), assim como foram utilizados estudos nacionais na área de gestão que abordam algumas particularidades entre cultura brasileira e gestão organizacional. Utilizou-se o método de pesquisa qualitativa, com a realização de entrevistas em profundidade com funcionários da empresa pesquisada. Os resultados mostram quais os elementos presentes na dinâmica organizacional que são percebidos como mais significativos pelos indivíduos entrevistados, assim como é analisado como as práticas gerenciais desta instituição podem estar relacionadas com a cultura brasileira. Conclui-se que a compreensão, tanto da dinâmica da cultura organizacional, quanto da adequação desta aos valores nacionais, pode se tornar uma importante ferramenta para a gestão organizacional.

The main cross-culture theories have provided important foundations for a better understanding of different national cultures, and have also significantly contributed for the research on organizational culture. This study aims to analyze the influence of national culture in the validation and legitimization of practices and management models. To achieve this purpose, the organizational culture of a multinational financial accounting consulting subsidiary, with operations in Brazil was mapped. Hofstede’s (1990, 1991, 1994) and Trompenaars’s (1994) cultural frameworks were used as theoretical foundation, as well as some Brazilian studies that address some peculiarities of Brazilian culture and organizational management. The qualitative research method was used, with the holding of in-depth interviews with the employees of the analyzed company. Results show which elements present in the organizational dynamics are perceived as more significant by the individuals interviewed. The relationship of management practices and Brazilian culture is also analyzed. It follows that the understanding of both the dynamics of organizational culture and its adequacy with the national values can be an important tool for organizational management.

Com base no referencial teórico gerado pela Escola Nórdica de Negócios Internacionais, foram desenvolvidas pesquisas sobre o processo de internacionalização de algumas firmas brasileiras, a procura de pontos de convergência entre os modos suecos e brasileiros de expansão das firmas além-fronteiras. O presente artigo analisa as principais idéias daquela escola e apresenta evidências empíricas extraídas de pesquisas sobre o processo de internacionalização de empresas brasileiras, que confirmam os principais pontos advogados pela escola.

Based on the theoretical background generated by the Nordic School of International Business, research on the process of internationalization of the Brazilian firms has been developed, looking for points of convergence between the Swedish and the Brazilian modes of expansion of the firms beyond the borders. The present paper analyses the main ideas of that school, as well as to present empirical evidences extracted from research on the internationalization process of the Brazilian firm, confirming its main points.
